General Information

The Holy Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, also known as Panagia, is located in the traditional village of Panagia on the island of Thassos. It is one of the most significant religious and cultural landmarks of the island and attracts many visitors, both for religious reasons and for its architectural and historical value.

The church dates back to the 19th century and is built in traditional Macedonian style. It stands out for its intricately carved wooden iconostasis, its frescoes, and the serene, devout atmosphere it offers.

Visitor Information:

  • Opening Hours: The church is open daily, especially during the summer months. Divine Liturgy is celebrated on Sundays and major feast days.

  • Dress Code: Respect for the sacred space is recommended – visitors are encouraged to wear modest and appropriate clothing.

  • Guided Tours: While organized tours are not always available, visitors can request information from the priest or church volunteers.

  • Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos (August 15): A major celebration featuring religious ceremonies, a procession of the icon, and local customs – it attracts many pilgrims from across Greece.

  • Access: The village of Panagia is located near Limenos (the island’s capital) and is easily accessible by car or bus.
